May 2015
For the Perkins family, RV-ing is more than a hobby — it's a lifestyle. In 2013, the couple had sold their home and many possessions and took an 18-month vacation across the country. They traveled from coast to coast twice, visiting 35 states in nearly two years while maintaining their careers — Jason as a computer specialist with Microsoft for 16 years and Amber as a traveling ICU nurse.
When the couple discovered they were expecting a baby boy they truly began to seek a shift in lifestyle. Jason left his position at Microsoft and the family began actively looking for an RV park to call their own.
"After all the traveling we realized that we love the RV community and thought we should do what we loved," said Amber.
Ouray turned out to be the ideal location, meeting every criteria they had in mind: a tight-knit community that's not too rural, somewhere with a good school district for Jasper to grow up in and a property that included an actual home the family can live in. (The RV park houses a 2,500 square foot home at the south end of the property.) When the Perkinses evaluated the area they were sold, and they closed on the purchase in May 2015.
"We're so happy to be here and we're really looking forward to being part of the community," said Amber. "We're trying to offer what we feel is the best RV & Cabin experience that anybody could have and we want people to come to our park and say they're coming back."
Park maintenance and settling into a new home have kept the Perkinses busy, but looking back none of this would have come to fruition without the birth of their son Jasper. He was born 10 weeks prematurely, weighing only two pounds and 10 ounces. Amber noted that the lively boy is "important to our story."
"It really gave us a new perspective on life," said Amber. "His early birth was truly what prompted us to take that leap and make the lifestyle change."
Jasper is now a healthy and lively toddler, eagerly scampering around the office and greeting guests with his big, bright eyes. He can be found around the park with his parents or grandfather, James, who is helping the family with work around the business.
